Austurlistinn and Viðreisn in Múlaþing
Party platform 2026-2030

More for Múlaþing

Children and young people are in the foreground. We will build up Múlaþing where the opportunities are equal, regardless of where we live. This means strengthening leisure, recreational and sports activities, as well as ensuring better mental health services at all levels of education. When we better support our children, it results in an improved community for all of us.

The policy is grounded on the principles of professionalism, responsible management and improved quality in all of Múlaþing’s services.

The quality of life of residents is the guiding principle in all decision-making. Equal opportunities for all residents are integrated into all basic services, such as education, social services, services for older people, leisure activities, transport, and environmental issues.

Múlaþing is an important economic area, and we have a claim to a fair share of the value that is created here. We will work hard to ensure that the government returns funds to our region.

Austurlistinn and Viðreisn will shape Múlaþing as:

  • A child-friendly and family-friendly community.
  • A community where residents and home rules have a real influence.
  • A municipality with strong basic services and a strong welfare system.
  • A progressive and sustainable municipality.

Children and young people

We will build a family friendly community. We do this by equalizing opportunities for children with comprehensive support without barriers and good mental health services at all levels of education. All children should be able to find suitable leisure activities, whether in sports, organized social activities, or something else entirely.

Priorities

  • Equal opportunities, regardless of residence.
  • Strengthening preventative measures, safety and welfare for children and young people.
  • More specialists in schools.
  • Powerful leisure activities and leisure grants that ensure equal opportunities for children.
  • Effective resources in the field of mental health, and social services.
  • Strengthening leisure, recreational, and sports activities.
  • Increased support for children with different abilities, and of foreign origin in play and work.
  • Additional resources for children with specific problems.
  • Emphasis on essential construction of structures that serve the future needs of children and young people in all population centres.

Welfare for the future

We know that welfare services that ensure the safety and functioning of residents at all stages of their lives are a prerequisite for Múlaþing to be a home of people for life. Our main focus is to bridge the gap between the support needed today and the demands of the future. Increasing the number of specialists such as developmental and occupational therapists and strengthening mental health services is an investment in the welfare of residents before the problem grows. With this, we will ensure that residents of all ages receive the appropriate services in time.

Priorities

  • Early intervention and increased support for those struggling with mental or social problems.
  • Strengthening basic welfare services is an investment in the future.

Older people

  • Strengthen the work and importance of the Council of Elders.
  • Increase diversity in activities and health promotion for older people.
  • Strengthen home care services for the elderly.
  • Ensure the development and financing of nursing homes for the elderly in collaboration with the state.

Residents of foreign origin

  • Múlaþing’s residents of foreign origin are important to us, we want all residents of the municipality to succeed in their work and play. It is particularly gratifying to see people wanting to settle here and cultivate their lives. We want to promote equal opportunities in the community.
  • We understand that good knowledge of the mother tongue is the basis for success in Icelandic.
  • Foreign residents should have access to Icelandic as a second language education as well as information for residents of foreign origin.
  • That Múlaþing sets a good example as an employer and offers its employees the opportunity to study Icelandic during working hours.
  • We want to make it easier for children of foreign origin to receive education in their native language.

Professional administration and responsible management

We are going to shift the focus on the issues that fall under the jurisdiction of the local authority. Good governance is the foundation for Múlaþing to be able to provide first-class services to its residents. We focus on the professional and responsible management of the municipality. This is a prerequisite for the municipality to be able to meet the challenges of the future and build on the real growth of the settlements. It is essential that decisions are made as close to those who are affected as possible. Home rule is an integral part of bringing democratic power closer to the people.

Priorities

  • That the opening of Múlaþing’s accounts to residents will be completed to increase transparency and restraint in operations.
  • Review of procurement to achieve 5-12% savings.
  • Review of the municipality’s operations, with the aim of streamlining where appropriate.
  • Using digital solutions to improve internal processes and services to residents.
  • Promote preventive measures for maintenance.

Let’s connect Múlaþing

Good transport is the foundation for Múlaþing to reach further. Transport issues in Múlaþing are of two kinds, one being the connections to other parts of the country, and the other being the connections within the municipality. We will undertake transport improvements in the area, including the construction of pedestrian and bicycle paths, more efficient public transport, increased snow removal and improved street lighting. We will not rest on our laurels to represent the interests of the region towards the government when it comes to the transportation plan, and the lifeline that Egilsstaðir Airport is.

Priorities

  • Protect public transport and work towards improved transport between urban centres.
  • Potent winter services for all population centres as well as the countryside.
  • Safe routes for children to school and after-school activities within the population centres.
  • Ensure road maintenance and improve street lighting.
  • Increased consultation with the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration and budgetary authority on road maintenance in rural areas.
  • Feasibility analysis and design of underpasses at key locations with the Icelandic Road and Coastal Administration.

Education is power

We focus on strong schools that nurture students and prepare them for the future. We will use methods, that have been proven in practice by other municipalities, to promote resources available to students and teachers. With a stronger school system, our children will be better equipped to pursue higher education and then return to their hometowns to participate in the development.

Priorities

  • Integrated support services at all educational levels will be strengthened and firmly implemented.
  • Safe and good working and learning environment with high-quality acoustics, lighting and air quality.
  • Support for teachers and other school staff to pursue continuing education.
  • Emphasis on more diverse ways to meet the needs of students.

Exponential growth development

We stand for a forward-looking development that ensures the quality of life for all residents regardless of age and place of residence Conditions must be created for future growth. We will work for improved planning that meets the needs of Múlaþing today – and for the future. A review of planning with sustainability as a guiding principle will pay for the development of residential housing. Rising property values call for a corresponding decrease in the assessment percentage. We will lower the assessment percentage.

Priorities

  • Ensure that there is a variety of residential housing available that suits the needs of all stages of life so that residents can continue to live in their population centres as their lifestyle and needs change.
  • The resident’s quality of life, and respect for nature and culture are our guiding principles in logistical matters.
  • Use population projections to ensure that each population centre has the services it needs.
  • Strengthen the centre area of Egilsstaðir as a societal centre and increase the attractiveness of the area as a service centre for East Iceland.
  • More efficient handling of logistical matters.
  • Increased consultation with residents and stakeholders.
  • Develop plots for people and businesses.

Labour and innovation

We will build a thriving business community in Múlaþing. The municipality is a strong economic area with numerous opportunities to pursue. The operating environment for companies of all sizes needs to be improved by simplifying regulations and making administration more efficient. We want to be an attractive area for business that generate jobs and secondary jobs.

Priorities

  • Implement new projects in Seyðisfjörður in the field of economic development and innovation.
  • Establish scheduled direct international flights from Egilsstaðir Airport within three years.
  • Promote the development of employment that harnesses local energy with an environmentally friendly approach.

  • That the municipality works to strengthen the economy with existing and new stakeholders in the region on new investments, including by hiring an employment project manager.
  • Improve the operating environment for businesses of all sizes by simplifying regulations and improving administrative efficiency.

Climate, sustainability, and environmental protection

We make Múlaþing greener through practical steps and responsible use of our natural wonders for the benefit of residents and future generations.
